Being Poor Isn't As Bad As He Thought

Q (6.)  On page 128, the cartoon that is drawn explains how nervous Arnold is to let the Reardan kids see that he is poor. During this part of the book Arnold exposes his low-class family. He and Penelope get invited to go to a 24-hour diner to go get pancakes with the upperclassmen after the dance. He had been hiding from everyone that he came from a low-class family so that he wouldn’t get made fun of. As soon as they got to the diner he knew he wouldn’t be able to pay for his and Penelope’s food but to his surprise his trustworthy friend, Roger, fronted him $40. After that he had to confess to Roger and Penelope that he was poor. In this cartoon it also shows how desperate Arnold was to find some kind of excuse just to show that he was not poor. To his surprise nobody made fun of him and were very supportive and Roger even gave him a ride home from the school so he didn’t have to walk home.

White vs. Indian Comparison

I chose this cartoon because I thought it was funny how he compared himself to the white kids, but in reality he is braver, stronger, and an overall better individual than any of the kids that went to Reardan. The main message of Junior's cartoon is how different he was from all the white kids and how he stuck out. The symbolism in this is that all the white kids come from middle-high class families and Junior comes from a very poor one.

Stolichnaya Vodka & Vans Shoes Advertisement

Stolichnaya Vodka

I picked this advertisement because how promiscuous the girls look. The hook of this ad is beauty and I believe the targeted audience is anyone that is legally allowed to drink.
1.       The women connect to the product because they represent young women in a bar going out for drinks.
2.       I think the target audience is 20-30 year olds that are looking to have a good time. I would expect to see this type of ad in a magazine for people over the age of 21. I think it is an affective ad to some degree, for women no but for men yes. Men are attracted to beautiful women at bars and this ad represents that.
3.       In this ad the young women are sitting there looking provocative and ready mingle. This ad promotes a party lifestyle, one who likes to drink hard alcohol on occasion. I believe the products implied promise is that if you try there vodka you won’t regret it.
4.       The text below implies that if you don’t try our vodka how will you know if like it or not? I think the text is directed to anyone that is willing to drink that kind of vodka. And I think that reader is a young man that is looking for beautiful women at a bar.

Vans Shoes

I picked this advertisement because I like the brand Vans. I think the hook for this ad is popularity and the target audience is anyone that likes wearing skate shoes.
1.       The two images in this advertisement are a picture of some skate shoes and the other is a picture a "cool" kid wearing those shoes. The two images tie into the ad because the ad is conveying that if you wear those shoes you’re going to look cool like the kid in the ad.
2.       I do not know who the man is it the ad but I think he contributes because they want you to think that he’s cool because he is wearing the vans shoes.
3.       I don’t know what the skull image behind the kid represents but I do know that if it wasn’t there it would completely change the mood of the advertisement because it would just be a normal kid sitting there.
4.       I believe the target audience for this ad would be a 10-20 year old male that skateboards.

The Case for a National ID Card

In Margaret Carlson’s essay, The Case for a National ID Card, she explains how she believes that if we all had ID cards that it would be easier for the government to suspect threats to our country. In this essay she argues that there are a lot of places that only require a driver’s license as a form of identification, but all a driver’s license says is that you know how to drive. I agree with her 100% and think that the government should issue out a national identification card so that whenever you show it they will know exactly who you are. I also don’t believe it is invading privacy either because I believe that if you don’t have anything to hide you won’t get in trouble.
